UPH Smart Classroom:
Enhancing Student-Centered Learning
In September 2024, Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) received a grant from the Directorate of Higher Education, Research, and Technology (Diktiristek) in a form of Smart Classroom for its commitment to innovative education. The grant, which amounts to IDR 400 million, is given in a form of a Smart Classroom, which has been installed in UPH’s main campus, Building D, Room 306.
What is Smart Classroom?
A smart classroom is an innovative learning environment equipped with advanced technologies, tools, and resources designed to facilitate interactive, engaging, and student-centered learning experiences. Because UPH implements Blended and Hybrid learning as one of the learning modalities, smart class facilities and features can support the implementation process. The primary function of a smart classroom is to transform the teaching and learning process by leveraging technology to:
- Enhance communication and collaboration among students and educators.
- Provide real-time access to educational resources.
- Foster a participatory and engaging environment to keep students motivated.
Components of Smart Classroom in D306
The smart classroom in the Room D306 has the following components:
- Interactive Flat Panel 86 Inch
High resolution and responsive performance, featuring split screen, timer, polling tools, and various student-centered learning support features.
- 4K TV
Displays students attending classes from home for seamless interaction with the lecturer an students.
- Tracking Camera
Installed at the front and back of the class to ensure lecturers remain visible on camera for remote students.
- Media Server and Storage
For data and learning material management.
- Audio System
Ensures clear audio quality for students both inside and outside the classroom.
- Connected PC
Integrates all devices to support smooth learning.
Strategies for Utilizing Smart Classrooms to Support Active Learning
- Incorporate Collaborative Projects
Utilize collaborative tools to facilitate group activities and peer-to-peer learning.
- Encourage Interactive Lessons
Use interactive displays and multimedia to create dynamic, engaging lessons that capture students’ attention.
- Adopt Flipped Classroom Models
Assign video lectures and reading materials for homework, allowing in-class time for discussions and hands-on activities.
- Utilize Real-Time Polling and Quizzes
Use digital tools for instant polls and quizzes to gauge understanding and encourage participation.
- Promote Gamification
Integrate educational games and challenges to make learning fun and rewarding.
- Foster Communication
Encourage students to use discussion forums and messaging tools for questions and idea-sharing.
- Encourage Reflective Practices
Incorporate digital portfolios or journals where students can reflect on their learning journey.
By strategically integrating these components and practices, smart classrooms can revolutionize the educational landscape, empowering students to become active participants in their learning process.
