Learning Guideline on Artificial Intelligence (AI) Tools
Context
AI or artificial intelligence is the science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs. AI tool is potentially used in many contexts including in the education area. This guideline is
provided to help students understand the potential use and limitations of AI tools.
The Principle
As the foundational value of education, learning is the most essential part of our journey as students in higher education. Thus, the use of any study aid including AI tools should be used ethically and responsibly by each student.
Ethical conduct and responsible use mean that UPH students should follow the policy of AI tool utilization set by the lecturer in each course. UPH students should understand that each course may have a different policy as each course and assignment has different purpose and directions. Violating the course policy is equal to violating the academic integrity standards. If allowed by the lecturer, use it as study aid to help us in the learning process.
Students are also not allowed to use AI tool to create content that is not their own and claim or present it as their own work, as it is considered plagiarism. If there’s no policy in class, students may ask the lecturer about the policy used in the course regarding the use of AI tools.
As a key takeaway, UPH students should understand the ultimate purpose of learning and make sure that the use of AI tools should not hinder students to get the most out of the learning experience and achieve proficiency in knowledge and skill taught in the class. This principle will prepare the students to master the knowledge and skill they need in the workplace (with or without AI) and will eventually benefit the students in the long run.
UPH Learning Guideline on AI Tools
A. The Do’s
- See it as a study aid to help you in the learning process.
- Use it to get insights, another perspective, or to spark or even challenge some ideas.
- Beware that AI tool can be outdated, biased, or incorrect.
- Use critical thinking and creativity to analyze AI tool’s answer or output.
- Always find additional references or cross-reference information to validate the information our output provided by AI tools.
B. The Dont’s
- Do not use AI generated text or other AI output from AI tools as final ‘product’. You will never truly learn if you just copy and paste the answer or use content from AI tools without using your own thinking.
- Do not use AI tools if it is prohibited by your lecturer.
- Do not use it as reference for your paper (it can be biased/incorrect/outdated). The database that is used by AI tools may be limited to a certain date.
C. Cautions
- The information provided can be outdated, inaccurate, irrelevant, out-of-context, too generic, or biased.
- It doesn’t have real human interaction and personalized feedback.
- It can limit the ability to develop your own perspective or hinder your learning process if it is not used ethically and properly.
- Privacy infringement. Be aware of the data stored in the AI tools that may be used by other parties.
