Navigating Intellectual Property Rights

Universitas Pelita Harapan, as an institution holding the prestigious title of “Unggul” is committed to maintaining the quality of education by developing high-quality teaching materials that are authentic and comply with copyright laws in Indonesia.

To raise further awareness of the importance of developing authentic teaching materials that comply with Indonesian Copyright Law, the Center for Teaching and Learning UPH collaborated with Sentra Hak Kekayaan Intelektual UPH and Johanes Oentoro Library UPH hold a webinar titled “Hak Cipta dalam Konten Pembelajaran” in mid-January 2024.

In this webinar, Ms. Ellora Sukardi, S.Sn, S.H, M.H, as the Coordinator of Sentra HAKI UPH, conveyed a very important message regarding copyright from both legal and artistic perspectives. She explained the existence of economic and social rights derived from intellectual creativity.

In the process of curriculum development, it is essential to increase alertness when utilizing sources, as they may be subject to copyright protection. Furthermore, Ms. Ellora also mentioned various types of copyrights, the role of industries, and common terminologies used, such as patents for technology. It is hoped that faculty members at UPH can understand the importance of copyright and fully leverage it for the development of teaching materials and research purposes, such as patenting innovations resulting from research.Meanwhile, Mr. Dhama Baskoro, S.S, M.Pd, Head of the UPH Library, emphasized the importance of utilizing open-licensed sources as one of the efforts in developing teaching materials, including how to properly reference original sources. Both Ms. Ellora and Mr. Dhama underscored the importance of information literacy and understanding copyright as key elements in avoiding legal violations, improving the quality of learning, and supporting educational efforts for practitioners in understanding intellectual property rights.
