Fun Learning Games in Moodle

When you think of Moodle, you probably think of quizzes, assignments, and maybe a lot of clicking. But did you know that Moodle isn’t just about serious tasks and endless readings? Our LMS (learn.uph.edu) actually supports a wide variety of fun learning games that make the learning experience more engaging and interactive. Here are some examples of fun learning games you can explore or use in your class:

1.

H5P Interactive Content

H5P allows you to create drag and drop activities, memory games, find the word and even flashcards all directly inside Moodle. Students get instant feedback, and you can track their progress easily.

Just add an activity and choose Interactive Content from the list in your LMS to get started!

H5P – Drag and Drop

This activity allows learners to visually engage with content by dragging items into their correct places. You can match images to words, concepts to definitions, or even ask students to rearrange parts of a sentence. It’s a great choice for language learning, vocabulary reinforcement, grammar practice, or categorization tasks. Because it requires active manipulation, Drag and Drop promotes critical thinking and deepens understanding—ideal for learners who benefit from a hands-on approach.

H5P – Memory Game

Transform your glossary or list of key terms into an exciting card-matching game. This format encourages students to remember and recall information through repetition and pattern recognition. Memory games are especially effective for visual learners and are great for reviewing terminology, concepts, or image associations in a way that feels more like a game than a test. They’re also well-suited for in-class competitions or self-paced review sessions.

H5P – Find the Words

This word search style activity lets you embed important terms within a grid of letters, where students must find and highlight them based on the clues you provide. It’s a light-hearted yet educational way to review vocabulary, test comprehension, or emphasize recurring keywords in your course materials. This tool is particularly helpful in language courses, science subjects, or any lesson that involves key terminology.

H5P – Flashcards

Flashcards remain one of the most effective methods for memorization and self-quizzing, and H5P brings them into the digital space with enhanced features. You can include text, images, audio, or a combination of all three to create flashcards that go beyond basic recall. Flashcards are perfect for reviewing definitions, formulas, historical facts, or language vocabulary. They’re especially useful for spaced repetition learning, helping students retain information over time.

2.

Game Plugin

The Game plugin turns your quiz or glossary into fun activities like Hangman, Crossword, Millionaire, and Snakes & Ladders. Students stay engaged, get instant feedback, and you can track their progress directly in Moodle.

Just add an activity and choose “Game” from the list in your LMS to get started!

Game Plugin – Crossword

This game automatically generates crossword puzzles using terms and definitions from your Glossary or Quiz short answer questions. You can set the number of rows, columns, and words to include. Each puzzle is generated dynamically, so every student gets a unique version. Students can press “Check crossword” to receive feedback instantly, helping them reinforce vocabulary or key concepts through a fun challenge.

Game Plugin – Hangman

This classic word game draws terms from your Glossary or Quiz short answer questions. Students guess letters to complete the word before the hangman is finished. You can customize settings like the number of words per game, whether to show the first or last letter, or whether the game reveals the question or the answer at the end. It’s a light, engaging way to test terminology and comprehension.

Game Plugin – Hidden Picture

This visual game hides an image behind a grid. As students answer questions correctly, parts of the image are revealed. The image can come from a Glossary that contains pictures, or from a separate image glossary if needed. The faster students answer correctly, the quicker they can guess what’s behind the hidden panels, making this perfect for visual learners and gamified classroom activities.

Game Plugin – Snakes and Ladders

Bring the classic board game to life in your LMS! Students answer questions from your Glossary or quiz bank to roll the dice and move across the board. Correct answers may help them climb ladders, while wrong answers could send them sliding down a snake. This game introduces a fun layer of chance and strategy to reviewing course content.

Game Plugin – Sudoku

In this version of Sudoku, the puzzle starts incomplete. Each correct answer reveals a new number on the grid, making it progressively easier to solve. It blends logical thinking with subject matter review, helping students practice both critical thinking and content recall.

Game Plugin – Book with Questions

Turn your instructional content into an interactive reading journey. Students progress through a digital “book” and must answer questions correctly to unlock the next section. This encourages self-paced, guided learning, ideal for modules, stories, case studies, or any content that unfolds step-by-step.

Game Plugin – Millionaire

Inspired by the TV quiz show, this game uses your multiple-choice quiz questions to simulate “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.” Students answer increasingly difficult questions and can use three lifelines. It’s perfect for a fun classroom review or knowledge check session. The rules are simple: Students must answer each question correctly to proceed. If they answer even one question incorrectly, the game ends. The result of each answer will appear in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
