Ensuring the Integrity of Online Examination
In an effort to enhance academic integrity in online examinations, EduTech introduces two innovative solutions that can be utilized by all faculty members in conducting Moodle-based exams: Safe Exam Browser (SEB) and Inspera Proctoring. These solutions are designed to ensure secure online assessments and prevent academic dishonesty during student evaluations.
1. Safe Exam Browser (SEB)
SEB is a specialized browser that can be integrated with the Moodle ‘quiz’ activity. SEB focus on creating a secure testing environment by restricting access to other applications and websites during the exam. SEB essentially locks down the student’s computer to a single testing platform, preventing them from browsing the internet or using other software. By using SEB, students can only access the exam page and are restricted from opening other applications on their devices. This feature helps minimize cheating opportunity during online examinations.
How to Use SEB:
- Faculty members can enable SEB directly from the quiz settings in Moodle.
- Ensure the “Require Safe Exam Browser” option is activated in the exam settings.
- Students must download and install SEB on their devices before taking the exam.
- During the exam, SEB restricts access to other applications and prevents students from opening additional tabs or programs on their computers.
- A guide for enabling SEB for instructors can be accessed at: SEB Guide
SEB is highly recommended for all online exams, particularly those with objective formats such as multiple-choice or short-answer questions since it is easy to instal and do not need much resource to run.
2. Inspera e-Proctoring
Inspera e-Proctoring is an AI-based online exam monitoring system that provides an automated proctoring solution by combining exam delivery with monitoring capabilities. Inspera might use webcam monitoring, screen recording, and even AI-powered analysis to flag suspicious behavior. With Inspera, students’ activities during exams are recorded and analyzed to detect suspicious behavior, such as leaving the screen or communicating with others.
Key Benefits of Inspera Proctoring:
- AI Monitoring: The system automatically monitors and records all student activities during the exam.
- Cheating Prevention: Students cannot open additional tabs while the exam is in progress.
- Analytical Reports: Faculty members can review recorded sessions to identify potential cheating or unusual activity.
- Operates Without Stable Internet Connection: Exams can continue even if WiFi connectivity is temporarily lost.

Implementation of Inspera Proctoring
To use Inspera e-proctoring, the students must use a PC/Laptop (Windows or Mac is supported, but not Android), with working webcams and microphones throughout the examination.
Currently, Inspera is used by Distance Learning (PJJ) and Kelas Karyawan for their online exams, and also by the Faculty of Medicine for exams which are conducted simultaneously in the computer lab and in the lecture hall.
With the implementation of SEB and Inspera Proctoring, faculty members can conduct online examinations with greater security and reliability. If your faculty is interested in using Inspera e-proctoring, you may contact the EduTech team at edu.tech@uph.edu.
